ERIC<b> <\/b>assumes that ethics is much more than procedural compliance with a prescribed set of rules or code. Ethical research demands that researchers continually reflect on their practice, well beyond any formal ethical review requirements. It requires ongoing attention to the assumptions, values, beliefs and practices that influence the research process and impact on children.<\/p><p>The ERIC approach is guided by the core ethical principles of respect, benefit and justice.<\/p><p>It is also underpinned by the ERIC framework of &#8216;Three Rs&#8217; &#8211; rights, relationships and reflexivity. This requires a commitment to children\u2019s <strong>rights,<\/strong>\u00a0recognition of the role of <strong>relationships,<\/strong>\u00a0and the need for researcher <strong>reflexivity<\/strong> in advancing ethical research (<a href=\"https:\/\/childethics.com\/library\/journal-articles\/ethical-research-involving-children-facilitating-reflexive-engagement-2\/\">Powell, Graham &amp; Truscott, 2016<\/a>).<\/p><p>ERIC recognises situated ethics and encourages\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000;\">critical reflection; cross-cultural, inter-sectoral and cross-disciplinary dialogue; context-specific problem-solving; and international collaboration, learning and engagement.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Children\u2019s rights, as laid out in the 54 articles of the United Nations Convention of the Rights of the Child (UN, 1989), are the foundation of the ERIC approach. As a starting point, Ennew and colleagues (2009; <a href=\"https:\/\/childethics.com\/library\/journal-articles\/the-right-to-be-properly-researched-research-with-children-in-a-messy-real-world\/\">Beazley, Bessell, Ennew &amp; Waterson, 2009<\/a>) combined four articles of the UNCRC to articulate children\u2019s \u2018right to be properly researched\u2019. Ethical issues and challenges arise in the space between researchers, research organisations, children, parents\/caregivers\/guardians, communities and others involved in the research process (<a href=\"https:\/\/childethics.com\/library\/other-literature\/building-capacity-for-ethical-research-with-children-and-young-people-an-international-research-project-to-examine-the-ethical-issues-and-challenges-in-undertaking-research-with-and-for-children-in-d\/\">Powell et al. 2011<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/childethics.com\/library\/other-literature\/international-literature-review-ethical-issues-in-undertaking-research-with-children-and-young-people-literature-review-for-the-childwatch-international-research-network-2\/\">2012<\/a>). Terms such as &#8216;situational ethics&#8217;, &#8216;situated ethics&#8217;, &#8216;in-situ ethics&#8217;, &#8216;everyday ethics&#8217;, &#8216;ethically important moments&#8217; and &#8216;ethics in practice&#8217; seek to recognise this relational context.<\/p><p>It should be noted that in ethical theory, relational ethics has often been considered at odds with rights-based understandings of ethics (see <a href=\"https:\/\/childethics.com\/library\/ethical-considerations-in-participatory-research-with-young-children\/\">Truscott, Graham &amp; Powell, 2019<\/a>). However, the ERIC approach seeks to bridge these differences, encouraging researchers to consider how children\u2019s rights might be best upheld in a given relational or situational context. A useful conceptual proxy for reflexivity is the idea of \u2018ethical mindfulness\u2019 (<a href=\"https:\/\/childethics.com\/library\/journal-articles\/ethical-mindfulness-reflexivity-managing-research-relationship-children-young-people-14-year-qualitative-longitudinal-research-qlr-study\/\">Warin, 2011<\/a>). This helps to highlight that reflexivity differs from reflection.
